Interviews

Nordstern Ceramics LLP

We are a team of seasoned entrepreneurs with over 40 years of collective experience in the paper industry. Throughout our journey, we have consistently delivered products and services that have either reduced operational costs or enhanced product value for paper mills across the country.

PaperDesk : What inspired you to start Nordstern Ceramics LLP?

Vikash Gupta : We were operating a family-owned paper mill along with a rolls servicing unit. During operations, I observed that ceramic dewatering elements were typically used for 4–5 years before replacement. However, only the working surface of these elements experienced wear, while the remaining structure remained intact. This led to the idea of restoring these elements through precision grinding, providing substantial performance and cost benefits to the industry.

PD : What challenges did you face while establishing this service?

VG : As a service-oriented company rather than a manufacturing concern, building customer confidence was a major challenge. Obtaining used samples for experimentation and selecting the right operational location were also key initial hurdles. Despite these challenges, the innovation has delivered clear value to the industry.

PD : How do you ensure quality in your refurbishment process?

VG : Our primary focus is restoring geometrical accuracy, edge-to-edge correctness, and achieving optimal surface finish. After extensive experimentation, we developed a special purpose grinding machine specifically designed for these materials.

PD : What role does technology play in maintaining accuracy?

VG : Our CNC grinding machines are highly sensitive to the delicate yet tough structure of ceramic elements, allowing controlled precision grinding. The machines are operated by trained technicians who undergo continuous assessment and skill enhancement. We use advanced testing equipment to verify geometrical accuracy and surface roughness and provide detailed inspection reports. Our grinding wheels are sourced from suppliers who are original suppliers to ceramic manufacturers.

PD : How does your business contribute to sustainability?

VG : Refurbishment significantly reduces industrial waste and lowers demand for new raw material consumption. It also contributes to reduction in foreign exchange outflow while promoting responsible and sustainable industrial practices.

PD : How do customer relationships contribute to your success?

VG : Our growth has been driven by strong customer relationships built on technical transparency and consistent service quality. We focus on understanding customer machine conditions and providing application-based technical recommendations.

PD : How does research and field observation influence your services?

VG : Our research is application-driven and based on real machine performance observations. Through refurbishing large volumes of components, we have gained insights into wear patterns and operational behavior. We also advise customers on supporting components such as stainless steel vacuum boxes that significantly impact performance and wire cloth life.

PD : What differentiates Nordstern Ceramics LLP from competitors?

VG : Our specialization, technical understanding of paper machine operations, and customized grinding solutions differentiate us. Our approach combines engineering precision with customer-focused service delivery.

PD : How has your company grown since inception?

VG : Since 2020, our focus has been establishing market credibility and ensuring consistent service quality. Recently, we doubled our processing capacity and increased maximum grinding length capability from 6000 mm to 8000 mm. We continue to protect our brand through quality assurance, documentation, and strong customer relationships.

PD : What internal practices help maintain operational excellence?

VG : Continuous workflow discipline, strong documentation practices, and regular training and assessment of technicians play a crucial role in maintaining operational excellence.

PD : Are there plans to expand into manufacturing?

VG : We are exploring manufacturing opportunities for certain engineered polymer and advanced material components currently not produced in India. We have already started partial assembly domestically, helping reduce customer investment costs by approximately 20–30%.

PD : How is Industry 4.0 influencing your operations?

VG : We maintain digital records of grinding data and job performance to ensure consistency, traceability, and process optimization in line with Industry 4.0 practices.

PD : How do you see the future of the Indian industrial ceramics sector?

VG : The sector will grow through increasing demand for high-performance and cost-efficient materials along with greater emphasis on lifecycle cost optimization. Localization, automation, and collaboration between service providers and manufacturers will play key roles in future growth.

PD : How do you ensure customer satisfaction?

VG : We prioritize technical transparency, detailed reporting, and personalized technical support. Prompt site visits to customer facilities further strengthen trust and technical confidence.

PD : How do you manage risk and operational challenges?

VG : Risk is managed through preventive maintenance, process monitoring, and strong technical evaluation before each refurbishment project.

PD : What steps do you take towards employee welfare?

VG : We emphasize skill development, safety training, and have provided insurance coverage for each employee through a private insurance provider.

PD : Do you have international expansion plans?

VG : We are open to expanding into international markets, particularly through collaborations with reliable and technically aligned global partners.

PD : How important are certifications and quality benchmarks?

VG : Currently, formal certifications are not widely required in our niche segment in India. However, we maintain strict quality procedures and remain open to adopting certifications in the future as industry expectations evolve.

PD : What message would you like to give to customers, peers, and future workforce?

VG : Our message is centered around long-term value creation through reliability, transparency, and technical responsibility. We believe collaborative growth and ethical practices will strengthen the industry and encourage future professionals to develop strong technical fundamentals and adaptability.

IGT Systems : In many companies, the IGT printability tester is often used for one test method only. This is a waste of resources because on most of our testers many more tests can be performed.
