Chapelton, a renowned supplier of paper and board materials across the UK and Ireland, has proudly unveiled Sustaina—a pioneering new range of sustainable packaging papers and boards aimed at redefining the future of eco-friendly packaging.
This major launch comes in response to the rising global demand for environmentally responsible materials in the print and packaging sectors.
At the forefront of this innovation is Sustaina Black, the world’s first carbon-free black pigmented barrier-coated paper and board. What sets this product apart is its use of a revolutionary black pigment developed by Nature Coatings, which is made entirely from wood waste—offering a truly sustainable alternative to carbon black pigments typically used in packaging. Designed for direct food contact, Sustaina Black provides excellent grease and moisture resistance, making it ideal for a variety of applications.
The Sustaina range doesn’t stop there. It includes multiple high-performance, eco-conscious products tailored to meet a broad spectrum of packaging needs. Sustaina Pack is a lightweight barrier board that uses only half the typical coating weight, offering a strong moisture and oil barrier while being PFAS-free and fully recyclable in standard paper waste streams.
Sustaina Oven is engineered for high-heat applications, with an aqueous dispersion coating that withstands temperatures up to 220°C, and it remains recyclable in the paper stream. For beverage and takeaway applications, Sustaina Cup serves as a sustainable alternative to PE-coated cups—fully recyclable, repulpable, mono-material, and PFAS-free.
For packaging requiring strength and structure, Sustaina Flute offers a microfluted corrugated board that is free from PE and PET, yet provides excellent resistance to grease and moisture, and can be recycled like regular paper.
Finally, Sustaina Flex introduces a flexible, heat-sealable barrier paper that offers superior protection against grease, water, and oxygen, while being fully recyclable and repulpable—ideal for flexible packaging needs in food and retail sectors.
Neil Skelton, Managing Director of Chapelton, expressed his enthusiasm about the launch, stating: “Sustaina represents a significant step forward in sustainable packaging.
