Interview with Mr. Mihir V Shah, Executive Director, Vipul Organics Limited.
Vipul Organics was built on the belief that disciplined Indian manufacturing can deliver world-class, application-driven colour solutions.
Paper Desk: What inspired the founding of Vipul Organics, and how did the company grow from its beginnings in 1968 into a specialty chemicals leader?
Mihir V Shah: The inspiration behind Vipul Organics was rooted in a clear recognition of India’s need for technically sound, application-oriented dyes and pigments at a time when the industry largely depended on inconsistent supplies and imports. The founders firmly believed that Indian manufacturing, when driven by discipline, process control, and continuous learning, could match global benchmarks in quality and reliability.
Over the decades, this belief translated into steady diversification. We today have a complete bouquet of offerings for the colourant segment – from dyes to pigments, pigment preparations, and specialty colour solutions across industries. A decisive shift occurred when we consciously moved away from being a volume-driven manufacturer to becoming a specialty chemicals company. This meant investing deeply in R&D, application laboratories, regulatory frameworks, and solutions that solve specific customer challenges rather than offering generic products. With certifications such as OEKO-TEX®, GOTS, ISO and strong sustainability practices, exports to over 50 countries, and ongoing investments in modern manufacturing technologies, Vipul Organics today stands as a respected name in specialty colour chemistry globally.
PD : How did early leadership and the involvement of the second generation shape the company’s strategic direction and values?
MVS : The first generation laid a strong technical and ethical foundation, focusing on credibility through consistent quality and longterm relationships rather than shortterm commercial gains. This built deep trust in the market.
The second generation retained these core values while introducing structure, scalability, and a sharper global outlook. There was greater emphasis on process discipline, technology upgradation, R&D-led growth, compliance, sustainability, and operational efficiency. This blend of legacy values and modern management thinking enabled Vipul Organics to compete confidently in both domestic and international markets.
PD : As Vipul Organics celebrates over five decades in the colour chemistry industry, which founding principles remain central to your identity?
MVS : Quality remains the cornerstone of our identity. Our longstanding customer relationships are built on reliability and performance. Sustainability is deeply embedded in our operations through responsible manufacturing and environmental stewardship. Operational excellence drives our scalability and competitiveness. We strongly believe in “Make in India, for the World,” demonstrating that Indian specialty chemicals manufacturing can meet the most demanding global standards with integrity and consistency.
PD : Can you describe the key product portfolio such as pigment powders, pigment dispersions, reactive dyes, direct dyes, naphthols, and food colors and their major industrial applications?
MVS : Vipul Organics offers a diversified portfolio including pigment powders, pigment dispersions, reactive dyes, direct dyes, naphthols, and food colours, catering to a wide range of industries. Our products have key applications in textiles, inks, paints & coatings, plastics, paper, rubber, leather, and packaging sectors.
In the paper industry specifically, our colorants are known for brightness, shade consistency, dispersion stability, and machine compatibility, which is a critical requirement for high-speed paper machines and uniform coloration. High Quality, batch-to-batch consistency and safety are ensured through controlled synthesis, precision grinding and dispersion, validated blending systems, stringent in-process controls, and advanced analytical validation. Standardized SOPs, safety protocols, and continuous technology upgrades ensure batch-to-batch consistency and regulatory compliance.
PD : How do Vipul Organics’ multiple manufacturing sites (e.g., Palghar, Tarapur, Ambernath) coordinate production and ensure scalability to meet diverse customer demands?
MVS : Our facilities at Palghar, Tarapur, Ambernath, and the upcoming integrated Sayakha plant operate as a coordinated manufacturing ecosystem. Being backward integrated allows us to produce key intermediates in-house, ensuring quality control, cost stability, and supply continuity.
Each plant supports specific stages of production, enabling optimized capacity utilization and flexibility. There is seamless coordination and this structure enables us to respond quickly to diverse customer requirements across domestic and international markets. The upcoming integrated Sayakha facility, with capacity comparable to the existing three plants combined, positions us strongly for future growth while maintaining consistency and service reliability.
PD : Are there active research initiatives focused on developing new pigment formulations, eco-friendly dyes, or enhanced intermediate chemistries to meet evolving industry needs?
MVS : We have active and ongoing R&D initiatives focused on new product development, application expansion, and sustainable chemistries, to meet evolving industry requirements.
Our current R&D efforts include:
- Development of specialty pigment formulations for the rubber and latex industry, with a focus on performance, dispersion stability, and durability.

PD : Which industry challenges could impact future growth, and how is the company preparing to address them?
MVS : Tightening regulations, rising compliance costs, supply chain issues, raw material volatility and global competition are key challenges that our industry face. Geo-politics is also a major challenge that has stilted the industry growth in the last few years. We are proactively addressing these challenges through early adoption of international certifications (such as GOTS, OEKO-TEX® Eco Passport, REACH, and ISO), investment in clean and efficient technologies, backward integration to control quality and costs, and diversified sourcing strategies across domestic and international suppliers. By focusing on sustainability, operational excellence, and value- added products, the company is well positioned to remain competitive and resilient in a dynamic global market.
PD : How does Vipul Organics integrate environmental sustainability into its operations such as achieving ISO 14001 certification, implementing zero liquid discharge (ZLD), and using green chemistry principles?
MVS : Environmental sustainability is the core of our operations and strategy. We follow a structured ISO 14001– aligned environmental management system to ensure compliance and continuous improvement. Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) systems are implemented to treat, recover, and reuse wastewater, minimizing environmental impact. We’ve adopted green chemistry principles to reduce waste, optimize energy use, and eliminate hazardous waste. Process optimization and cleaner technologies support safer and more efficient manufacturing. We are also expanding into a new membrane technology vertical that focuses on advanced separation and purification solutions. It enhances water efficiency and cleaner production processes. The initiative strengthens our green technology roadmap.
