HP’s Appadurai: Personalized Packaging Is Key to Winning Gen Z Consumers

Packaging personalization and digital printing reshape brand engagement, says HP’s Appadurai

Packaging is evolving beyond its traditional protective role to become a powerful brand engagement tool, with personalization, sustainability, and digital printing emerging as key drivers of consumer connection, according to A Appadurai of HP.

Speaking at the Spectaledge event hosted by HP, SpectalPack, and Redington in Bengaluru, Appadurai said brands today compete not only for shelf visibility but also for consumer attention across digital and physical touchpoints. He explained that every interaction with a product—from online research to purchase, use, and social media sharing—plays a crucial role in shaping customer perception and influencing buying decisions.

Appadurai highlighted that changing consumer demographics are transforming packaging strategies. Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha, who together account for a significant share of India’s population, increasingly expect products that reflect their personal preferences while meeting demands for sustainability, convenience, and speed. At the same time, shorter product life cycles are pushing brands to refresh both products and packaging more frequently.

He noted that digital printing technologies are enabling companies to respond to these changing market dynamics by offering variable graphics, eliminating minimum print run requirements, and supporting cost-effective short production runs. The technology also allows brands to produce highly personalized packaging—even for individual products—while reducing material waste and improving production flexibility.

Drawing on examples from global consumer brands, Appadurai said customized packaging campaigns featuring personal names, regional languages, limited-edition designs, and interactive consumer participation have delivered measurable gains in sales, customer engagement, and brand visibility across social media platforms.

He also emphasized the growing importance of packaging as a storytelling platform. Consumers, particularly younger generations, increasingly seek information about product origins, sourcing practices, and sustainability credentials. Packaging, he said, can help brands communicate transparency, showcase support for farming communities, and build stronger emotional connections with customers.

Looking ahead, Appadurai said advances in digital printing technologies and software will continue to expand opportunities for personalized packaging across seasonal promotions, co-branding initiatives, marketing campaigns, and one-to-one consumer experiences, enabling brands to strengthen loyalty while driving long-term business growth.
