Indian Packaging Industry : The Next Growth Story By Vikas Panwar

India’s packaging industry is at an inflection point. Rising consumption, e-commerce, FMCG, pharmaceuticals, food, organised retail and premiumisation are driving strong demand for better packaging.

Packaging is no longer just protection – it is product presentation, brand communication, functionality and sustainability.

For the paper industry, this creates a significant opportunity, particularly for Duplex Board and Multilayer Paper Board.

Paperboard at the Centre of the Opportunity

Duplex Board remains a key packaging substrate for FMCG, pharmaceuticals, food, consumer products and folding cartons. Customers increasingly demand better printability, stiffness, surface quality and, above all, consistency.

Multilayer Paper Board is gaining momentum in rigid and high-strength applications where caliper, bulk, stiffness and plybond are critical.

The future is not about simply making heavier board. It is about delivering higher performance with optimum fibre consumption.

Challenges Ahead

The industry faces four major challenges :

Raw Materials & Costs : Volatility in recovered paper, pulp, chemicals, energy and logistics will continue to pressure margins. Efficiency and fibre optimisation will be critical.

Sustainability : Recyclability, responsible fibre sourcing, water and energy efficiency and regulatory compliance are becoming customer requirements—not optional initiatives.

Quality : Customers want predictable performance. Consistent GSM, caliper, moisture, stiffness, plybond and surface properties will increasingly differentiate manufacturers.

Manpower : Skilled technical manpower is becoming a major constraint. Modern machines require people who understand paper technology, automation, instrumentation, chemistry and maintenance.

 People + Technology

Automation will increasingly reduce manual dependency, but it will not eliminate the need for skilled people.

The winning model will be :

Skilled Manpower + Automation + Process Discipline = Sustainable Competitiveness

Companies will need to invest in technical training, apprenticeships, cross-functional skills and modern process-control systems.

 From Tonnes to Value

The industry’s focus is shifting from volume to value.

The key questions will be :

  • Can we produce lighter board without compromising strength?
  • Can we reduce fibre, energy and water consumption?
  • Can we improve converting performance and reduce customer rejection?
  • Can we make paperboard more sustainable without compromising functionality?

These questions will drive the next generation of Duplex and Multilayer Paper Board.

 The Road Ahead

India has the market, manufacturing ecosystem and consumption growth to become a major global packaging hub.

But capacity alone will not create leadership.

The winners will be companies that combine quality, innovation, sustainability, technology and skilled manpower.

The future of Indian packaging is therefore simple :

More performance. Less waste. Smarter manufacturing. Greater value.

For the paper industry, the opportunity is to move from being merely a supplier of board to becoming a partner in the future of sustainable packaging.
