DS Smith Announces Major Restructuring Plan with €480 Million Savings Target

DS Smith, the EMEA packaging business of International Paper, is preparing for a major operational restructuring programme ahead of its transition into an independent publicly listed company.

The initiative forms part of the company’s strategy to streamline its operations, improve efficiency and strengthen its competitive position in the European paper-based packaging market.

As part of the restructuring plan, DS Smith is set to close 29 manufacturing plants across its operations, with the objective of creating a more efficient and streamlined business structure. The company is targeting approximately €480 million in cost savings by 2027 through operational improvements, manufacturing optimisation and cost-reduction measures.

The planned changes are expected to simplify the company’s manufacturing footprint and improve operational performance across its European business. By consolidating facilities and optimising production capabilities, DS Smith aims to establish a more focused operating model that supports long-term business efficiency.

The restructuring comes as International Paper prepares to separate its EMEA packaging operations under the DS Smith name, allowing the business to operate independently. The spin-off represents a significant corporate development following International Paper’s acquisition of DS Smith.

The targeted savings programme will be an important part of the company’s transition, helping establish a more competitive cost structure and supporting its future strategic priorities.

The development highlights the ongoing changes taking place in the global paper and packaging industry, where companies are increasingly reviewing manufacturing networks, operational structures and production efficiencies to adapt to evolving market conditions.

DS Smith’s planned restructuring and separation mark a significant phase in the company’s business transformation as it prepares for its next stage of independent operations.
