China Paper Industry Undergoes Rapid Capacity Adjustment as Supply-Demand Balance Changes

China’s Paper Industry Accelerates Capacity Clearance Amid Shifting Supply-Demand Dynamics

China’s paper industry is witnessing a faster pace of capacity clearance as two established paper manufacturers—one in northern China and another in the south—have announced asset auctions, highlighting an ongoing wave of market consolidation and production rationalization.

In northern China, Ningxia Zijinhua Paper Industry, which previously operated an annual household paper production capacity of 120,000 tons, has initiated asset disposal. In southern China, Guangxi Jindaxing Paper Industry, known for producing high-end newsprint, premium cultural paper, release paper, thermal paper, and other specialty papers, has also begun asset liquidation.

The removal of Ningxia Zijinhua Paper Industry’s household paper capacity is expected to slightly reduce overall market supply, improving the supply-demand balance and providing support for household paper prices.

The accelerated capacity reduction across the paper sector is also likely to soften demand for wood pulp, the industry’s primary raw material. A weaker supply-demand balance in the pulp market could place downward pressure on wood pulp prices.

Meanwhile, the closure of Guangxi Jindaxing Paper Industry’s cultural paper production is expected to tighten industry supply, improving market fundamentals and lending support to cultural paper prices.

Similarly, the reduction in the company’s newsprint production capacity is projected to marginally lower market supply, strengthening the supply-demand balance and supporting newsprint prices.

In the specialty paper segment, the capacity clearance is also expected to reduce supply modestly, creating a more balanced market environment and contributing to firmer specialty paper prices.

The latest asset auctions underscore the paper industry’s ongoing restructuring, with capacity optimization expected to reshape supply-demand dynamics across several paper grades while influencing raw material demand in the coming months.
