From upgrade to results: High-performing pulp drying at CMPC Guaíba

The CMPC Guaíba mill in Brazil has set a new standard in pulp drying performance following the successful upgrade of its Line II, delivered by Valmet as part of the BioCMPC project.

With single shoe press configurations in the wet ends, drying section upgrades for higher section steam pressures, and an additional baling line, the modernization increased drying and baling capacity, improved energy efficiency, and ensured consistent pulp quality.

Production capacity

One of the most significant achievements of the project is the increased production capacity of Line II’s two pulp drying lines, which now have a combined capacity of up to 6,100 air-dried tonnes per day (Adt/d).

“Quality, capacity and production targets were achieved. The investment successfully increased our single-line drying capacity from 2,500 Adt/d to 3,050 Adt/d, supporting the mill’s production growth demand,” says Antônio Augusto de Souza, Executive Manager of Drying and Paper Production at CMPC.

A record-breaking single-line production output of 3,200 Adt/d has been achieved, further demonstrating the success of the modernization.

High-performing wet ends

A key contributor to the upgrade’s success is the machine wet-end design, featuring a single shoe press configuration on both lines. The solution has achieved an exceptionally high, sustainable metric load of 416 Adt/m, a remarkable figure in the pulp drying industry.

The machine wet ends combine proven technology with high efficiency and availability, delivering excellent dewatering performance. The upgraded solutions also contributes significantly to process stability and energy savings.

“With the single shoe press configuration, we achieved 58% dryness content at the press outlet, meeting the area’s performance targets. At the same time, it reduces energy consumption, since no additional electric motors are required. It also contributes to sustainability by eliminating felt waste generation,” de Souza says.

Supporting long-term production growth

Beyond the capacity increase, the upgraded drying lines have strengthened the mill’s day-to-day performance. Improved operational stability and reduced need for interventions provide a solid foundation for future growth.

“More day-to-day operational stability, less need for interventions, and a more robust foundation to sustain the mill’s long-term production growth are among the key benefits we have seen from the upgrade,” de Souza says.

The results also support CMPC’s commitment to sustainability. Improved drying efficiency and lower energy consumption contribute to more resource-efficient production while helping the mill meet its operational targets. These achievements further strengthen the Guaíba mill’s position as one of the most advanced and sustainable pulp production facilities in the world.
