Our Vision is to adopt state-of-the-art contemporary technology and be the world’s most sustainable brand to manufacture eco-friendly paper and paperboards. We also strive to create an inclusive work environment, become the best place to work at, and grow in favourable opportunities.

PaperDesk : TNPL has emerged as one of India’s leading sustainable paper manufacturers over the decades. What was the original vision behind establishing the company, and how has that vision evolved today?

Yogesh Gupta : TNPL was established with a clear national purpose—to strengthen India’s paper self-sufficiency while reducing dependence on imports. Built on the pioneering concept of converting sugarcane fibre, technically called bagasse, into high quality paper, TNPL created a unique link between agriculture and industry, turning a renewable by-product into a valuable national resource.

The original objective was to support India’s growing needs in education, publishing and communication through domestic paper production, while generating employment, supporting farmers and making productive use of available resources. TNPL thus emerged as one of India’s earliest large-scale sustainable industrial models.

Over the years, that vision has expanded significantly. Today, TNPL has evolved from a paper manufacturer into an integrated sustainable enterprise with strengths across paper, paperboard, farm forestry, renewable energy, water conservation and responsible manufacturing. While the scale and product portfolio have grown, the core philosophy remains unchanged—creating value from renewable resources and serving the nation through responsible industrial growth. In that sense, TNPL’s journey reflects India’s own progress—from self-reliance to innovation, and from manufacturing excellence to sustainability-led development.

PD : Being a pioneer in bagasse-based paper manufacturing, what inspired TNPL to adopt an eco-friendly production model at a time when sustainability was not a major industry focus?

YG : TNPL’s bagasse-based manufacturing model was driven by innovation and intelligent resource planning. With Tamil Nadu having a strong sugar industry base, TNPL recognised early the opportunity to utilise bagasse, an underused by-product of sugarcane, as a dependable raw material for paper manufacturing. It was a forward-looking industrial decision that combined local resource availability with technology and value addition.

This approach gave TNPL a distinct advantage by building a production model around efficiency, innovation and optimal use of resources. By converting agro-residue into high-quality paper, TNPL created a manufacturing pathway that was economically viable and environmentally responsible. What began as a smart industrial choice has today evolved into a strong foundation for TNPL’s sustainability-led growth.

PD : TNPL has successfully diversified from paper into packaging boards, cement, and renewable energy. What key milestones have shaped this transformational journey for the company?

YG : TNPL’s transformational journey has been shaped by strategic diversification, technology modernization, operational excellence and sustainability-focused growth. Established in 1979, TNPL commenced production in 1985–86 with 90,000 MT per annum of paper based on bagasse. Over the years, the company steadily expanded its scale and capabilities, with Unit I recording its highest-ever production of 4.67 lakh metric tonnes, establishing TNPL among India’s leading paper manufacturers.

A major milestone in this journey was TNPL’s expansion into premium packaging boards through Unit II at Mondipatti, which today recorded 2.75 lakh metric tonnes of production and strengthened the company’s position in the value-added packaging segment. TNPL further diversified into cement manufacturing through industrial waste utilisation, and into renewable energy with 35.5 MW wind power capacity, reinforcing its circular manufacturing approach.

The company’s recent achievements—including ₹106 crores in procurement savings, 8.01 lakh metric tonnes of plantation sourcing, industry-leading low water consumption of 27.18 litres per kg of production, and CSR healthcare outreach benefiting more than 50 villages—reflect how TNPL has evolved into a diversified, future-ready enterprise with sustainability at the centre of its growth.
