Mondi and FIXIT GRUPPE standardise paper bag packaging across Europe, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 135 tonnes of CO₂.
As one of Europe’s leading system providers for building materials, FIXIT GRUPPE supplies a wide range of products to DIY stores across the region.
In line with its sustainability strategy, FIXIT GRUPPE set out to simplify its paper bag packaging portfolio across European markets. Following an expert audit and close collaboration with FIXIT GRUPPE teams, Mondi developed a unified paper bag portfolio for more than 100 building material products that supports recycling and helps lower greenhouse gas emissions by 135 tonnes of CO₂ compared to the previous year.
This collaboration reflects Mondi’s focus on circular–driven solutions through packaging design that supports recyclability and resource efficiency.
The challenge: managing a diverse packaging portfolio across European markets
FIXIT GRUPPE offers more than 100 building material products, each with specific packaging requirements influenced by product characteristics, climate conditions and local regulations. Over time, this resulted in a fragmented portfolio of paper bag grades and formats across European markets.
This complexity made it challenging to:
- apply a consistent packaging approach across markets
- support progress against its sustainability targets
FIXIT GRUPPE required a packaging solution that would:
- protect powdered building materials
- function reliably on existing filling machinery
- align with its climate and resource-efficiency objectives
The solution: a standardised paper bag portfolio developed with Mondi’s integrated expertise
Mondi carried out an expert audit at its Bag Application Centre in Frantschach, Austria, where specialists reviewed FIXIT GRUPPE’s existing packaging portfolio.
The assessment focused on
- paper grammage
- barrier requirements
- thickness of the plastic inner layer (plastic reduction potential)
Based on this analysis, Mondi and FIXIT GRUPPE worked together to define a unified portfolio of standardised paper bag formats designed to meet the needs of different building materials and European markets. As a backward-integrated producer, Mondi supplied sack kraft paper from its own mills and delivered paper valve bags that provide the required moisture protection while supporting efficient and reliable filling on FIXIT GRUPPE’s machinery.
The bags are designed to support recycling and were assessed using the 4evergreen fibre-based packaging recyclability evaluation protocol.
