PaperDesk : What inspired the establishment of SBS Recycling in 1960’s, and how has the company evolved over six decades in the recycling industry?
Rajesh S. Sundrani : SBS Recycling was founded with the objective of converting wastepaper into valuable resources while addressing critical environmental concerns.
The journey began with our founder, Late Sri Sanatkumar B. Sundrani, who gained valuable experience working with the wastepaper company Mangaldas & Co.
He later established his own paper recycling business in 1962 in equal partnership with his brother-in-law, Late Sri M. L. Pujara, under the name M/s M. L. Pujara & Co. Over the next four decades, the company evolved from a small recycler into a well-established organization built on a strong and enduring partnership. In 2004, SBS Recycling Pvt. Ltd. was formed to further expand and modernize operations.
Today, the company is ably led by second-generation entrepreneurs Sri Rajesh S. Sundrani and Sri Linesh S. Sundrani, along with the third generation, Sri Dhaval R. Sundrani. RSS : The company’s core philosophy of sustainability continues to drive its operations by emphasizing on reduce waste to landfills, resource conservation, and eco-friendly practices.

RSS : SBS has continuously invested in R&D to develop efficient wastepaper collection systems, improve sorting accuracy, and adopt innovative recycling techniques.
PD : Can you elaborate on the range of wastepaper grades handled by SBS Recycling and how technology ensures quality segregation and processing?
RSS : SBS handles multiple grades of wastepaper, including office waste, newspaper, corrugated boxes, mixed paper and several speciality grades. Advanced sorting technologies usage of knuckle boom crane, shredding systems, digital moisture meter, and systematic grading processes ensure proper segregation, maintaining high-quality standards for different paper manufacturing segments.
PD : How do your automated baling systems and sorting facilities enhance operational efficiency and large-volume handling capabilities?
RSS : Automated baling and sorting systems significantly improve operational efficiency by reducing manual labour, increasing processing speed, and ensuring consistency. These technologies enable and enhance SBS capacity to handle large volumes upto 150 MT /day of wastepaper efficiently while maintaining uniform output quality.
PD : How does SBS Recycling cater to both domestic and international markets through logits sourcing network across multiple regions?
RSS : SBS has developed a robust sourcing network that connects suppliers and paper mills across regions, enabling it to serve paper mills from both domestic and international sources from 6 continents encompassing 15 countries. This extensive network ensures consistent supply and adaptability to varying market conditions.
PD : What innovative practices have been implemented to streamline supply chain logistics and ensure cost-effective wastepaper procurement?
RSS : The company utilizes optimized logistics planning, vendor integration systems, ERP, and efficient transportation strategies to streamline operations. These innovations help reduce costs, improve turnaround time, and ensure reliable procurement processes from local & worldwide supply chain network.
PD : With over 60 years of experience, how has SBS Recycling built strong relationships with paper mills and diverse wastepaper suppliers?
RSS : Through consistent quality, transparent dealings, and reliable services, SBS has established long-term relationships with paper mills and suppliers. Trust and performance have been key factors in maintaining these strong partnerships. Our sister concerns STP Services Pvt. Ltd., provides total logistics solutions for Pulp & Paper and other industries. Our group company Bharati Papers has been providing C&F services for over 2 decades to JK Paper Ltd. for their Finished Paper.

PD : How is SBS contributing to technological advancements in India’s paper recycling sector through modern baling, sorting and shredding techniques?
RSS : We were the first company way back in 1970’s to use a Vertical Hydraulic baling machine and one of the first to start using an Automatic Horizontal baling machine in 2008 for baling wastepaper. We adopted advanced sorting, knuckle boom cranes, shredding machines, weigh bridge and processing technologies that improve efficiency and output quality. These technologies help modernize the recycling sector and set higher operational standards and efficiency.
PD : What role do automation and logistics technologies play in improving recycling capacity and reducing landfill dependency?
RSS : Automation increases processing capacity, accuracy and reducing dependence on manpower, while efficient logistics ensure timely waste collection and delivery. Together, they reduce landfill waste and promote sustainable recycling practices.
PD : How do you foresee the growth of the paper recycling industry in India in terms of demand, sustainability, and regulatory frameworks?
RSS : The industry is expected to grow rapidly due to increased environmental awareness, government regulations, and rising demand for sustainable materials. Over the next 5 years the Paper Recycling market is expected to grow 7-8% and reaching market value of roughly USD 1.45
billion by 2031. Recycling will play a key role in supporting India’s circular economy and increasing the recovery rate from the current 30% to 58% of the Global Average will help reduce dependency on Imported Wastepaper by improving source segregation, efficient collection mechanism and Government incentives & support.
PD : What opportunities exist for expanding recycling infrastructure and increasing awareness among industries and institutions?
RSS : Opportunities lie in expanding collection networks, investing in advanced facilities, and promoting awareness campaigns. Increased participation from industries and particularly from the Government can significantly boost recycling rates.
PD : How does SBS Paper Recycling contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing landfill waste and saving natural resources?
RSS : SBS helps reduces load on landfills by recycling large volumes of paper, conserving natural resources like trees, water, and energy. Every ton of recycled paper saves 17 mature trees, 26500 litres of water and 4000 kWh of electricity. It also saves 3.5 cubic metre of landfill space and reduces air pollution by 74% when compared Virgin pulp usage.
PD : What initiatives are undertaken to educate businesses and communities about responsible waste management and recycling practices?
RSS : The company promotes awareness campaigns partnering with NGO’s, educational institutions and direct engagement with clients, encouraging responsible waste disposal and recycling habits.
PD : Has SBS Paper Recycling received any industry recognition or awards for its contributions to sustainability and recycling excellence?
RSS : SBS has gained industry recognition for its consistent commitment to sustainability, operational excellence, and contribution to the recycling sector over the years. We were the first in the Paper Recycling Industry to get an ISO 9001 Certification for QMS to ensure global standards to ensure consistent product/service quality, improve customer satisfaction, and drive continuous improvement.
